iPhone 4 Cases

Better late than never! I’ve finally got my hands on the fabled, all singing, all dancing, signal attenuating iPhone 4. Yes I’m left handed, and yes the signal absolutely bombs out if I hold the iPhone in the “wrong” way and takes a while to recover. I don’t see how a software fix can change this fact. Apple may want to think about employing some left handed product testers. When I say “bombs out” I mean that the signal goes from absolutely full, through “searching” to “no signal.” That, I dare say, is not a software bug. However, I invite Apple to prove me irrefutably wrong.

Anyway, I digress. As a person who never really uses a phone to phone people this little factoid barely concerns me. But it concerns plenty of other iPhone 4 owners, making cases an absolutely essential accessory to many.

That’s where Gadgetoid comes in. Following on naturally from our recent and continuing spate of iPad case coverage, I will now be looking at a plethora of cases for the iPhone 4. These will probably be a little slow to arrive, due to low availability of iPhone cases and my significant backlog of iPad cases still to bring to your attention. Not to mention a handful of other gadgets!

I’d like, however, to suggest a couple of slip cases off the cuff. First up, my much beloved Proporta Maya II case for iPhone 3G(s) fits the iPhone 4 like a glove. It incidentally also fits the Magic Mouse pretty well, making me glad that I’ve somehow ended up with two of them. It’s a good starter case for the iPhone, and a good, cheap, and readily available slip case if you’re the sort to favour a naked iPhone over obscuring its beauty with leather or silicone.

Secondly, the SENA leather iPhone 3G slip case also fits the iPhone 4, but not quite as well. It protrudes slightly from the top of the case, but this is such a sexy leather case that this could be forgiven.

If you’re having trouble getting your hands on an iPhone 4 case, and aren’t dead set on a signal strength fix, then these are both great, and already available cases. Otherwise, stay tuned as the iPhone 4 cases trickle into Gadgetoid.com and get the usual treatment. No doubt I’ll be looking at some iPhone 4 accessories too, and testing anything I already have for compatibility.

Oh, and I’m typing this on the iPhone 4 with an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard. Lovely! Bluetooth keyboard support is a long awaited addition to Apple’s core iOS offering, yet there are still plenty of things that I eagerly await an update or jailbreak to fix- only being able to orientation lock the iPhone into portrait mode, for example, is one absurd limitation which renders the feature completely useless to me.
