I live in the US and I have a Toshiba Thrive tablet. I have a wireless carrier for the house only but I want to use this Toshiba thrive tablet off and on outside when I travel around the city or go on vacation. The tablet is not 3G it is a honeycomb android wifi 802.11 bgn wireless tablet. For the life of me I can't get a straight answer from anyone out here nor the web. I want to know if I purchase the Huawei Mobile Mifi E586 will it work for this tablet?? I don't even know where I would begin to look for a compatible standard sim card for it as I use a prepaid tracfone. So I just want a my tablet to have some sort of wifi connectivity when I go out. Virgin mobile has a tablet plan and I saw they carry a standard size sim card. Rates are high though. Any other suggestions and would their sim card work in this E586. As you can tell I am pretty frustrated trying to find the right answers. Please email be personally at h.halo@yahoo.com Thank you If you have any other suggestions if the above won't work please let me know.

I hope somebody reads this email and writes back. Now I can send and receive text messages from my iPOD! It's not perfect as the 'back/reply' etc buttons are far to small (similar buttons on other screens are fine, though).

Have just logged into my E586 from an iPOD and found it has a mobile version of the admin screen. Not so on Mac OS Lion... all I got was a lousy shortcut. And I tried on two separate computers to make sure.Might have to try again!

Aha, that’s exactly the sort of thing I’d have expected to see installed. It loaded about 10 things when the USB drivers were installed on my Win7-64 bit laptop. I should have taken a screen shot. Here's a selection of what shows in control panel:HUAWEI Mobile Connect - 3G PC UI Interface
HUAWEI Mobile Connect - Network Adapter
HUAWEI Enumerator Device
HUAWEI Mobile Connect - Bus Enumerate Device
HUAWEI Mobile Connect - Extra Control DeviceAnd some other storage stuff. In fact, you don't need any drivers to charge it, so they must be doing something. I'm actually using it now via USB - when I plug it in, my Thinkpad turns off the wifi adapter (power saving maybe?) It's irritating as the Fn key to turn it back on wouldn't work and I had to reboot - not the dongle's fault, of course.

I think you must have done. I couldn't really find much use for the USB connection, other than charging it. Did I somehow totally miss USB dongle functionality? Probably serves me right for being a Mac user!

Thanks for the feedback, it’s appreciated. It works for me (after I thought to open explorer and browse the device, not having auto-run enabled, I hadn't realised there was anything to install - it certainly isn't needed for wifi use). All in all an excellent device from my hour or so's playing with it.
I'm not sure what is meant by standby, though. Is it with no wireless device connected?

I have to disagree with the comment about using it via the USB connector.
