More Playing With PlayTV

January 2nd, 2009

I’ve been tinkering with PlayTV for the PS3 again recently, a rare occurrence given my reliance on Sky+ which renders it almost entirely obsolete.

Specifically I’ve tried using PlayTV via Remote Play and additionally tried exporting recordings to the XMB and copying them onto USB storage to try and play elsewhere.

Both of these things worked surprisingly well!

PURE One Elite DAB Radio Review

December 23rd, 2008

The Pure One Elite is a slightly more traditional entrant into our radio review lineup in that it lacks any sort of internet radio capability. If your home doesn’t have a WIFI network then the savings incurred by going with the DAB/FM-only One Elite should surely be welcome.

Stylistically the Pure One Elite is clean, simple and rigorously rounded off to produce an aesthetically pleasing shape. Alas it’s just a little too plain for me and I find myself wanting for a dash of chrome alongside a colour-accented gloss black body. As it is, it looks like a white kitchen appliance and if your kitchen is full of standard white appliances it’ll fit right in. If you’re a stainless steel or chrome fan then you might want to look at the Pure Evoke Flow instead, which oozes style but boasts a slightly different feature set.

Altec Lansing T612 Review

December 23rd, 2008

Amidst the mountain of DAB/WiFi radios we’re covering at the moment, I thought it wise to include a few alternatives. The PURE i10 proved to be an admirable iPod dock, but not so hot for the iPhone 3G. This time I’m looking at a dock that includes room-filling speakers, the very iTouch/iPhone complimentary Altec Lansing T612.

If you’re not a fan of radio in general, and enjoy listening to music that you’re thoroughly in control of then an iPod/iPhone dock is a logical choice… if you own an iPod or iPhone, of course.

Christmas Radio Roundup

December 10th, 2008

If you’re a busy individual, or just don’t like reading reams of reviews then here’s our quick and dirty radio round-up to help you choose the right DAB/Internet radio for that special someone (yourself, obviously).

This year we’ve got a reasonably good line-up of DAB, FM, Internet and Network aware radios from a handful of manufacturers from Arcam to PURE. Without further ado, here’s the list:

PURE Evoke Flow Review

December 9th, 2008

A couple of months ago we started rounding up radios of all different shapes, sizes and types to conduct a little bit of a face-off between them and determine the best choices for your kitchen entertainment.

My favourite has to be the Pure Evoke Flow if only because of its irrefutable gook looks, which are accented with tastefully integrated yellow OLED screen with matching LED backlit, touch sensitive buttons. Great for a kitchen environment where it might need wiping clean every once in a while. The black gloss finish will, of course, mean that you’ll be wiping off fingerprints every ten minutes, but that’s the price of good looks!

Roberts MP-43 Sound System Reviewed

December 9th, 2008

Another DAB capable offering from Roberts, the Roberts MP-43 made its way to the desks of Gadgetoid a few months ago and has since obtained a bigger brother in the form of the MP-53 which shares the same form factor and most of the same functionality including a handy iPod dock.

This review, however, focusses on the earlier and more affordable MP-43 which still holds its own against the MP-53 even if it’s a little less stylish.

Roberts SolarDAB Solar Powered DAB Radio

December 9th, 2008

Amongst the absolute wealth of DAB/Internet radios I’ve been looking at in the run up to Christmas, the Roberts SolarDAB still stands out as the most innovative and flexible, even though it’s a ridiculously simple concept.

It is far from the best looking DAB radio I’ve ever clapped eyes upon, but it makes up for this by being extremely portable, environmentally friendly and available in a selection of colours to, sort of, suit your taste.

SlingCatcher Unboxing

December 5th, 2008

Better late than never. After getting back from a month off the grid I’ve got my hands upon a SlingCatcher for review. As an avid fan of the SlingBox, and of convenience, I’ve been waiting for the SlingCatcher for the best part of a year and it’s finally here in all its black, angular glory.

Continue over the fold for arbitrarily-resized, blurry iPhone 3g photos of the unboxing process.

Sony Rolly Dancing Mp3 Player

November 3rd, 2008

Whilst perusing a Sony store looking for an all-in-one computer suitable for wall mounting an enthusiastic attendant gave me a demonstration of the Sony Rolly.

And it is hard not to be enthusiastic about the Rolly. It’s an interesting concept, a dancing Mp3 player, that moves fluidly and accurately in time with the music emitting from the two little speakers on each end. It has two expressive flaps that cover and protect these speakers and allow it to make a little bit more of a show of its song and dance.

Microsoft Xmas Showcase 2008

November 3rd, 2008

image by gaygamer.netYou may, or may not, have noticed that we’re getting fairly close to that most wonderful time of the year, when radio stations start playing Mistletoe & Wine, scarf and gloves become a daily necessity and mince pies are back on the supermarket shelves.

It’s also a time of the year where a fiercely drawn out competition takes place on both the real and virtual high street between the manufacturers of toys, games and other technology wonders.

The Gadgetoid team was kindly invited down to the St Martins Lane Hotel, London to get a hands-on look at some of Microsofts games and gadgets that will be available in stores in time for christmas. Follow the jump for our thoughts about the New Xbox Experience, Live Mesh and more…
